Requirement of shipper of dangerous goods to submit ERAP to Transport Canada

22 July 2009

Dear Valued Customer,

In order to be in compliance with the safety regulations of transporting dangerous goods in Canada, we wish to remind shippers of the requirement to submit an Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP) to Transport Canada before shipping any dangerous goods in and out of Canada. This requirement has been in place for many years but has gained further importance with today’s heightened security.

The objective of an ERAP is to ensure that there is immediately available a suitable response to emergency situations involving the dangerous goods for which the plan was created. Assistance from the plan holder may be in the form of telephone advice based on the information given by the personnel at the scene of any emergency or travel to the scene with specialized personnel and equipment.

It is the responsibility of shippers exporting or importing dangerous goods for which an ERAP is required to establish such a plan and to have that plan approved by Transport Canada.

The persons designated to issue an approval of an ERAP are the people in the Transport Canada, Transport Dangerous Goods Directorate, who hold the following positions:

  • Director General;
  • Director, Compliance and Response; and
  • Chief, Response Operations

We appreciate your understanding and continued support. Do not hesitate to contact you local Customer Service or APL representative should you require additional information.

Yours Sincerely,
