NOL shipmanager wins top award for training and development

Singapore, 26 September, 2007 - The ship management arm of container transportation and logistics group NOL has received the Excellence in Training Development accolade at the Singapore International Maritime Awards 2007.

Neptune Shipmanagement Services (Pte) Ltd (NSSPL), which is responsible for running the ship fleet of NOL's container shipping business, APL, received the award this week at a gala ceremony in Singapore attended by hundreds of senior maritime industry representatives.

The awards, which are judged by independent panel, acknowledge the recipients' excellence and their contribution to the development of Singapore as an international maritime centre.

On collecting the award, NSSPL Managing Director, Sim Hee Ping, said: "Our people are our number-one asset. We do everything possible to maximize their potential and to ensure that we provide the best possible customer experiences."

NSSPL takes a long-term approach to developing talent. "You can build a ship in nine months but it takes up to 10 years to train a good captain," said Mr Sim.

As supply chains become more international and complex, companies still demand that their cargo arrives on time.

"Our crew are the facilitators of the just-on-time concept. This is where a ship delivers raw materials on time, these then go to factory in Asia to be processed. Once the product is finished, it's put on another ship, and it goes to the customer in the United States or Europe," explained Mr Sim.

To ensure that customers' needs are met, each of NSSPL's 1,300 sea staff – from cadet to captain – is placed on a comprehensive training and development programme.

Central to this is NSSPL’s onboard computer-based training system. This ensures that every crew member has a stipulated number of modules to complete to improve and refresh their knowledge of their job as well as learning soft skills such as management, which are the stepping stones for promotion.

On-ship training is also supplemented by shore-based learning for around one-third of staff each year.

In addition, NSSPL implements a special training theme each year. This year, it is behaviour-based safety. Staff are trained to such an extent that safety practices become instinctive.

As a core part of its growth strategy, NOL is expanding its ship fleet significantly with the addition of some of the industry's largest, fastest and most environmentally friendly ships. NSSPL's holistic approach to training will ensure these ships will be in safe hands.

"We will continue to find and nurture the best people to provide the best services to our customers. If you're known to be the best, people will come to you and customers will trust you," concluded Mr Sim.
