EPA honors APL Logistics for second time in two years

Greenhouse gases curbed in freight transport, earns Environmental Excellence award

Denver, Oct. 7, 2008 - For the second time since 2006 APL Logistics has been honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for curbing greenhouse gas emissions in freight transport.

The supply chain services leader received its second Environmental Excellence Award today at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals annual global conference in Denver.

"I commend APL Logistics for leadership in promoting sustainable transportation practices," said Margo T. Oge, Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality at the EPA. "Their commitment is helping lead us toward a cleaner environment and more secure energy supply."

The company was honored by the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership. Under SmartWay, EPA joins with members of the freight industry to reduce fuel consumption and limit emissions in fleet operations.

APL Logistics has influenced truck and rail partners who carry the firm's containers to become SmartWay members. That means they use modern, fuel-efficient equipment and observe "no idling" restrictions by switching off engines when loading or unloading at APL Logistics facilities.

APL Logistics said it has working arrangements with 168 truck and rail carriers operating under SmartWay guidelines. According to EPA figures, in the last two years APL Logistics’ program has resulted in:

  • 1.3 million pound reduction in C02 gas emissions; and
  • 120 million gallon reduction in diesel fuel consumption.

Since 2006 APL Logistics has given preference to SmartWay compliant carriers. It requires all new carriers doing business with the company to become SmartWay members. By January, membership will become mandatory for all of its carriers.

"Our customers insist that we do everything we can to reduce the environmental impact of containerized trade," said Vice President of Land Transport Services Bill Villalon in accepting the award for APL Logistics. "It's only natural that we demand the same from our business partners. We’re pleased that the EPA recognizes the importance of what we’re trying to achieve."

APL Logistics first won the EPA’s Environmental Excellence award in November of 2006 for its support of SmartWay-member freight carriers.
